In 1163, the first stone of Notre Dame Cathedral was laid in the presence of Pope Alexander III. The construction, spanning two centuries, blends Early Gothic and Rayonnant Gothic styles. Upon its completion, it was among the largest cathedrals in the Western world. Restored after the Revolution, it gained fame through Victor Hugo's novel, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Over 13 million visitors and pilgrims visit each year.
